Can a Theatre be too Big?
Paul and Lindsey Oxley knew they’d be getting a bonus room when they signed on with Orlando–based homebuilder Bob Sorenson of Sorenson Construction.
What they didn’t know is how much they’d actually use the space. Positioned over a four-car garage, the room was spacious enough to accommodate just about anything. From the get-go the Oxleys envisioned it as a super-size storage space.
After speaking with Sorenson’s home electronic subcontractors, though, the couple was convinced that the best way to utilize the space would be to turn it into a home theatre. Luckily, the room wasn’t quite finished when Ken White and his crew at MillenniumWaves were brought on.
“We put in a floor riser and ran heating and cooling ducts to the room,” White says. A wall and doors were added to shorten the 26-foot long room and to create a dedicated area for a ticket counter, concession stand and a built-in equipment rack. The remaining space would be just the right size for the six comfy theater seats requested by the Oxleys. Read the rest of this entry »

Inside Segway Inventor Kamen’s Off-the-Grid Island Property
He calls himself Lord Dumpling, and his island “nation” has a zero-tolerance policy for incandescent lights. In fact, he claims to have the first fully self-powered nation. He is Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway electric scooter and other devices, some of which are responsible for making his island property self-sustaining—along with a lot of LEDs (light emitting diodes).
Kamen’s vacation property is a lighthouse on North Dumpling Island, off the Connecticut coast but technically a part of New York state . In the 1990s Kamen jokingly seceded in a zoning dispute over the installation of a wind turbine. He was later allowed to install the 10-kilowatt turbine, and signed a “non-aggression pact” with former President George H.W. Bush.
All was well between the “countries” until a couple of years ago, when the U.S. Coast Guard decided to cut the undersea cable that powered the lighthouse. Kamen’s island would have to be self-sustainable, with solar panels powering the lighthouse. Read the rest of this entry »

Old Fireplace Transforms into 105” Screen Wall
In todays property blog technology post we look at a smoking Home Theatre built out of an old fireplace.
It’s a good thing this property already has electronics toys, because Santa’s not popping out of the fireplace anytime soon.
Not only is the flue blocked off, but the firebox is stuffed with a couple of subwoofers.
That’s the compromise these property owners made when they decided to transform this unfinished walkout basement into a home theatre. The husband wanted to preserve as much seating area as possible, leave enough space to build a stage for their kids and keep the screen wall at the front of the room.
“He didn’t want a structure in there for subwoofers, so we didn’t really have a good place to put them,” says Tom Wells, president of Virginia-based custom electronics pro Integrated Media Systems (IMS). “They decided they wanted to abandon the fireplace and make it a screen wall, so that hole in the wall became a great place to install the subs.”
That was easier said than done. When IMS ran the idea by the building inspector, Wells was told, “you can’t just do that.” The fireplace shared a flue with another fireplace on a different floor of the property, so the theater room fireplace needed to be sealed off. With fire block materials and bricks, the seal was achieved. Without having to worry about the area as useful space, IMS went a step further by having some of the hearth’s masonry removed to create more room. Read the rest of this entry »
