New social housing developments underway in Brisbane’s south-west

post-header

The Queensland Government has announced progress on two social housing projects in Brisbane’s south-west as part of its Homes for Queenslanders plan:

  1. Inala development:
  • 14 new social homes under construction
  • 13 one-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartments
  • Aimed at older Queenslanders and those looking to downsize
  • Accessible design for people with disabilities and seniors
  • Built by Kane Constructions (QLD)
  • Scheduled completion: mid-2025
  1. Darra development:
  • 10 homes recently completed
  • Tenants have moved in
  • Built by Nileport Projects

Key points:

  • These projects are part of nearly 1,000 social homes currently being built across Queensland
  • The government’s plan aims to build 53,500 more social homes
  • The developments are designed to address high demand for one-bedroom units, particularly for young people and seniors
  • Downsizing opportunities for seniors aim to free up larger social homes for families in need

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing housing needs through various initiatives, including building and buying more social homes, working with community housing, and supporting first homeowners and renters.

The projects are utilizing local builders and innovative construction methods to expedite completion. The Inala complex will use a hybrid concrete and cross laminated timber construction methodology.

A new resident, Anne Steele, who moved into the Darra complex, expressed satisfaction with her new, more manageable living space.

The government contrasts its efforts with the opposition, claiming the LNP is blocking 8,000 Queenslanders from buying their own homes.
