Kellie Richardson, a Melbourne-based interior designer, has offered advice on simple decor changes that can help lift mood and reduce financial stress at home.

Richardson, founder of Kurved by Design, said Australians are feeling the pinch of rising living costs.

“People are staying home because they can’t afford to go out. They are feeling depressed and down at home which is adding to their financial stress,” Richardson said.

The award-winning designer, known for incorporating Feng Shui principles into her work, shared several tips to create a more positive home environment.

Richardson suggested decluttering as a first step.

“Clear out unnecessary items to create a sense of space and order. Be ruthless. Maintain your belongings neatly organised to promote a calm and serene environment,” she said.

Enhancing natural light was another key recommendation.

“Light is uplifting. Keep windows clean and unobstructed to allow natural light to flow in. Place mirrors strategically to reflect light and make the space feel larger and brighter,” Richardson advised.

The designer also emphasised the importance of incorporating plants.

“Add indoor plants to bring life and freshness into your home. Plants like peace lilies, snake plants, and jade plants are good for Feng Shui,” she said.

Colour choice was highlighted as crucial for creating a calming atmosphere.

“Choose colours that promote calmness and positivity. Light blues, greens and earthy tones are great for creating a relaxing atmosphere,” Richardson suggested.

She recommended balancing different elements in the home, such as introducing water features, candles, wooden furniture, and metal accents.

Richardson stressed the importance of good air quality and creating a welcoming entrance.

“Ensure good airflow by opening windows regularly and using air purifiers,” she said.

“Keep the area around your front door clean and inviting. Use a welcome mat and good lighting,” Richardson added.

The designer also provided tips on furniture placement, incorporating soothing sounds, and adding personal touches to spaces.

Richardson won the global CEO Excellence award in 2020 for ‘Best Property Styling and Interior Design Business’.

She emphasised that these changes can create a harmonious environment that aligns with Feng Shui principles and enhances overall well-being.
