A recent study conducted by The Perfect Rug has ranked countries with the largest average house sizes globally, based on square footage and other housing factors.

Key findings include:

  1. Australia tops the list with an average house size of 2,303 square feet (214 square meters).
  2. New Zealand comes in second with 2,174 square feet (202 square meters) on average.
  3. The United States ranks third at 2,164 square feet (201 square meters).
  4. Denmark stands out with nearly 40% of citizens living alone.
  5. Malta has the highest homeownership rate at 81.9%.

The study analyzed factors including average household size, percentage of households by number of occupants, overcrowding rates, and homeownership percentages. Data was sourced from World Population Review, Statista, Eurostat and official census information.

Australia, the top-ranked country, has an average household size of 2.5 people, with 49.9% of households comprising 2-3 people. The country also boasts a low overcrowding rate of 3.1%.

New Zealand, while second in house size, has a significantly higher overcrowding rate of 10.8% compared to Australia.

The United States ranks closely behind New Zealand, with 65.9% of citizens owning homes. Nearly half (49.4%) of American households consist of 2-3 people.

Denmark, ranking seventh, has the smallest average household size at 2.1 people and the lowest homeownership rate at 59.2%.

Greece, which rounds out the top 10, has the highest overcrowding rate at 17.8% despite having similar average house sizes to other countries on the list.

A spokesperson for The Perfect Rug commented: “Secure housing is crucial and this study shows that the size of the house doesn’t directly lead to comfort. Overcrowding is a clear problem for many countries, Greece, New Zealand and Mexico among many.”

The study highlights that housing solutions vary by country and may include government programs or innovative interior design approaches.
