Sydney’s inner-city has gained a new sports destination with the completion of Perry Park’s transformation in Alexandria.

The City of Sydney has unveiled a FIFA-sized synthetic pitch, amenities pavilion and change rooms at the park, complementing the existing recreation centre opened in 2019.

Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO, will officially open the facility on Saturday 27 July.

“Many decades ago, Perry Park was a rubbish tip. We’ve turned it into a sports lover’s dream with world-class indoor and outdoor facilities giving residents and visitors more options to stay active and healthy in Australia’s global city,” Ms Moore said.

The new synthetic pitch meets FIFA requirements and can accommodate training for various sports including touch football, Oztag, rugby league and union, and hockey.

Improvements to the park include new lighting, fencing, a drop-off zone and some parking.

The amenities pavilion features accessible toilets, change rooms with showers, storage areas and covered areas for spectators.

Access to the park has been enhanced with a new path linking surrounding streets to the pitch and an additional accessible entry ramp.

The project has also focused on increasing green space, with 26 large native trees planted alongside retained mature trees, including Fig trees.

Hundreds of native plants have been added under trees and along entry paths to boost local biodiversity.

This development is part of the City of Sydney’s ongoing efforts to improve public parks and provide more green spaces for residents.

The Lord Mayor highlighted the park’s proximity to public transport, walking and cycling paths, as well as its location near the growing Green Square precinct.

Perry Park Recreation Centre, which opened in 2019, continues to be popular for indoor sports such as futsal, basketball, netball and volleyball.

The new outdoor facilities aim to meet the increasing demand for sports fields in the area, providing a versatile space for community use and potential training grounds for future athletes.
