Labor government expands housing for women at risk of homelessness in Brunswick West

The Allan Labor Government is significantly increasing housing for women at risk of homelessness in Brunswick West, with the expansion of the Harvest Square development nearing completion.

Housing Minister Harriet Shing announced that 198 new homes will replace 81 old walk-up public housing units at the site, more than doubling the previous capacity.

“Women are the fastest growing group of people at risk of homelessness โ€“ and we’re setting out to change that by delivering brand new homes that are designed for women and include the wraparound support they need to maintain secure, stable housing,” Ms Shing said.

The $86 million project will provide a mix of social and market rentals, with 119 homes dedicated to social housing. This represents a nearly 50 per cent increase in housing at the site.

The development, previously known as Gronn Place, is strategically located near public transport, schools, and community facilities. It will feature energy-efficient, accessible homes and generous public open spaces.

The project is a collaboration between Homes Victoria, Women’s Housing Limited, and AVJennings. Women’s Housing Limited, a specialist housing provider, will offer support services for residents on site.

Member for Pascoe Vale Anthony Cianflone highlighted the development’s location advantages.

“These new homes are close to services, shops and education, and they’ll create a wonderful community that residents will enjoy for generations to come,” Mr Cianflone said.

The Harvest Square project is part of the government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build initiative, which aims to deliver more than 12,000 new homes across Victoria. The program has already seen over 9,600 homes underway or completed, with more than 4,400 Victorians moving into new homes.

Ms Shing emphasised the broader impact of the Big Housing Build program.

“Our $5.3 billion Big Housing Build will deliver thousands of bright, beautiful, modern new homes in great places, with access to the services and support that people need,” she said.

The government’s focus on housing for women over 55 reflects growing concerns about homelessness in this demographic, which has been identified as the fastest-growing group at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
