Sydney has been named one of the world’s top ‘workcation’ destinations for 2024, according to International Workplace Group’s (IWG) second annual Work from Anywhere Barometer.

The Australian city scored highly in climate (8.5), sustainability (8), and subsistence (7.5), outperforming major cities like London, Toronto, and Dublin.

IWG’s research evaluated 30 leading ‘workcation’ cities across 10 key criteria, including climate, culture, accommodation, transport, food & drink, happiness, broadband speed, sustainability, and flexible workspace availability.

Damien Sheehan, IWG Country Head for Australia, highlighted Sydney’s appeal:

“Sydney’s recognition as a top ‘workcation’ city is a testament to the unique blend of professional opportunities and lifestyle it offers,” Mr Sheehan said.

The rise of hybrid working has fueled the popularity of workcations, where travelers combine work and leisure to extend their holidays. IWG’s research found that 77% of Australian hybrid workers would consider taking a workcation in 2024 if supported by their company.

Key findings from the study include:

  • 74% of workers view a ‘work from anywhere policy’ as a significant factor when considering a new job
  • 75% said the freedom to work from anywhere boosts their job satisfaction
  • 80% stated that these policies have prompted them to consider new destinations

Budapest topped the 2024 rankings, followed by Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro in joint second place. Sydney’s exact ranking in the top 10 was not specified in the release.

Mr Sheehan expects the workcation trend to accelerate:

“We expect this ‘workcation’ movement to accelerate even further with more companies adopting WFA policies to enhance employee wellbeing and bolster their appeal as employers,” he said.

The barometer also highlighted new contenders for 2024, including Austin (Texas), Podgorica (Montenegro), Marrakesh (Morocco), and Valletta (Malta).

IWG, which operates brands including Regus, Spaces, and HQ, offers a global network of flexible workspaces to support the growing trend of remote work and workcations.
