The Allan Labor Government has announced a $2.5 million investment to support the development of the Portland North Employment Precinct, which will bring a new Bunnings Warehouse to the regional Victorian town.

Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney said the project will drive economic growth and create local jobs in Portland and the surrounding Great South Coast region.

“The arrival of Bunnings at the Portland North Employment Precinct will drive economic growth, create more local jobs, and position Portland as a hub for major employers, benefiting the entire Great South Coast region,” Ms Tierney said.

The funding, part of the Portland Economic Diversification Plan, will support infrastructure upgrades including improved drainage and road works.

Construction of the 5,300 square metre Bunnings store is expected to employ around 50 workers during the build. Once completed in 2025, the store will create more than 50 new ongoing jobs and feature 120 car parking spaces.

Preliminary works, including the construction of an access road on New Street, are already underway with local contractor Mibus Bros carrying out the initial works.

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora highlighted the project’s significance for the local community.

“The Portland North Employment Precinct is set to bring vital jobs and opportunities to our community, boosting the local economy and enhancing the future of Portland,” Ms Ermacora said.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Karen Stephens described the precinct as an “engine room for jobs” and welcomed the Bunnings development.

Bunnings Regional Manager Dave Roddis expressed enthusiasm for the new store.

“We’re looking forward to bringing a Bunnings store to Portland and offering locals a wide range of home, lifestyle and DIY products,” Mr Roddis said.

The project is part of the government’s $45 billion investment since 2014 in initiatives supporting regional and rural Victoria.
