National Skills Week aims to boost women’s participation in trades

The 2024 National Skills Week is highlighting increased opportunities for women in trades, as employers focus on gender diversity amid persistent skills shortages.

Brian Wexham, Chair of National Skills Week, said addressing the gender imbalance is crucial to improving participation in trades.

“Gender gaps in trades need to be closed with a coordinated approach that begins with an emphasis on vocational training and apprenticeship opportunities,” Wexham said.

The federal government has committed an additional $30 billion for Vocational Education and Training (VET) over the next five years, which is expected to create more opportunities for women.

According to the latest Jobs and Skills Australia report, fill rates for Technician and Trade Worker positions remain below 50%, the lowest among all major occupational groups.

Industry estimates suggest a current shortfall of 90,000 tradespeople nationally, with women comprising only 3% of tradespeople in construction.

Michael Morrissey, CEO of Brick & Block Careers, highlighted opportunities in the building and construction industry.

“We aim to fulfil the career aspirations of young Australians and job seekers, by providing employment opportunities in brick and block laying,” Morrissey said.

The event is showcasing success stories of women in trades, including Elizabeth Briggs and Hannah Bramble, both bricklaying apprentices with Brick & Block Careers.

Other examples include Amy Hunt, a cable jointer in Perth who has progressed to a supervisory role, and Sophie Rock, an apprentice auto electrician from South Australia.

Komatsu Australia, a National Skills Week partner, has set a target of 42% female diversity for its 2024 apprenticeship intake.

Zara Carey, General Manager People Experience at Komatsu, said the company is committed to developing young talent and showcasing diverse opportunities in the heavy equipment and mining industries.

National Skills Week runs from August 19 – 25, 2024 and features a range of VET Alumni available for media interviews to share their success stories.
