The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has announced Maria Edwards as its interim CEO, effective 9 September 2024.
Ms Edwards, currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT), brings extensive experience in the real estate sector to her new role.
REIA President Leanne Pilkington expressed the board’s satisfaction with the appointment.
“Maria is a career real estate practitioner across rentals, sales and business development as well as social and affordable housing that has led REIACT calmly and capably,” Ms Pilkington said.
Ms Pilkington highlighted Ms Edwards’ achievements at REIACT, noting her success in expanding membership and delivering commercial outcomes.
“She has in her short time at REIACT significantly expanded the REIACT membership and delivered a range of commercial outcomes with her vast business development expertise,” Ms Pilkington said.
The REIA board expressed confidence in Ms Edwards’ ability to provide leadership to members and ensure organisational continuity during this transition period.
REIA and REIACT have been collaborating since their co-location at the redeveloped Real Estate House in Deakin, Canberra, in March 2024. Their joint initiatives include an inaugural auctioneering partnership with Expression Australia.
A nationwide recruitment process is currently underway for the permanent appointment of REIA’s next CEO, with HAYS appointed as the recruitment advisor.
The REIA, established in 1924, represents 85% of Australian real estate agencies and advocates for an industry comprising 46,793 businesses that employ 133,360 Australians.
Ms Edwards’ appointment comes at a crucial time for the Australian real estate industry, as it navigates ongoing challenges and opportunities in the property market.
