Kellie Richardson, a respected interior designer and founder of Melbourne-based Kurved by Design, has highlighted the importance of colour choice in home decor, emphasising its impact on mood, behaviour, and overall energy.
Drawing on principles of good design and Feng Shui, Richardson advises against several colours that may trigger unwanted reactions:
- Dark or harsh black: Can make spaces feel small and oppressive. Use as an accent colour instead.
- Intense red: May create feelings of anxiety or restlessness. Use in moderation or in specific areas like dining rooms.
- Overly bright yellow: Can cause eye strain and irritability. Opt for softer shades or use as an accent.
- Neon or fluorescent colours: Can be overstimulating and quickly go out of style. Use sparingly in accessories.
- Cold gray: May create a dull or depressing atmosphere. Choose warmer grays or mix with warmer tones.
- Deep or muddy brown: Can make spaces feel heavy and uninspired. Consider lighter shades or warm accents.
- Excessive white: May feel stark and clinical. Mix with soft pastels or warmer neutrals.
- Overly saturated or dark purple: Can feel overly dramatic or depressing. Use lighter shades for elegance.
- Overly bright orange: May lead to anxiety or discomfort. Use muted tones in moderation.
- Overpowering green: Can feel jarring in relaxation spaces. Choose softer, muted greens.
Richardson, who won the global CEO Excellence award in 2020 for ‘Best Property Styling and Interior Design Business’, emphasises the need to balance personal preference with psychological impact when choosing colours.
“Choosing colours for your home should be a balance of personal preference and the psychological or energetic impact those colours may have. It’s often helpful to test colours in small amounts before committing to larger areas,” Richardson said.
She also noted that certain colours might affect individuals differently, citing research on photosensitive epilepsy and ADHD in relation to bright colours and patterns.
Richardson recommends aligning colour choices with Feng Shui principles, considering the energy flow and purpose of each room to create a harmonious living space.
