A new report from the NSW Productivity and Equality Commissioner has shed light on critical barriers to housing supply in the state.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) welcomed the report, which examines housing supply challenges and policy options for New South Wales.

David Bare, HIA Executive Director NSW, praised the Commissioner for incorporating feedback from builders, stating, “I applaud the Commissioner for listening to feedback from actual builders on the ground and giving them the opportunity to provide input into a review of this nature.”

The report addressed key issues facing the construction industry and highlighted actions the government needs to take to support housing supply delivery in NSW.

HIA expressed satisfaction that many of its positions were reflected in the Commission’s recommendations.

These recommendations included making developments more feasible, streamlining the development assessment process, creating a pro-housing regulatory environment, and supporting the development of a larger skilled labour workforce.

Bare noted that despite an initial focus on non-planning barriers, the Commissioner could not ignore current issues within the NSW planning system that hinder development.

He emphasised the need for a balanced approach to housing supply, stating, “HIA believes there needs to be a focus on increasing housing supply across the housing continuum, rather than focusing on one housing segment.”

The report’s findings have now placed the onus on Premier Chris Minns to implement the recommendations.

Bare concluded by challenging the Premier, saying, “The challenge is now with Premier Minns to see how many of these recommendations will be adopted and how quickly they can be implemented by his Government.”

The report’s recommendations, if adopted, could potentially address longstanding issues in NSW’s housing supply chain and contribute to alleviating the state’s housing shortage.
