Antonia Mercorella, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), has been named a finalist for the 2024 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards in Brisbane.

Ms Mercorella is one of four contenders for The Courier-Mail Business Person of the Year Award, with the winner to be announced on 25 October 2024.

As the first female and youngest leader in the REIQ’s 100-year history, Ms Mercorella has been credited with transforming the organisation into one of Australia’s most progressive and high-profile professional peak bodies.

REIQ Chairman Peter Brewer praised Ms Mercorella’s impact on the real estate sector and broader community.

“Antonia’s strong personal, humanitarian and social justice values, shaped by her experiences as the daughter of Italian migrants, are at the heart of her tireless efforts in business and beyond,” Mr Brewer said.

He highlighted her role in improving diversity, equality and governance at the REIQ.

“Under Antonia’s leadership, the REIQ has undergone a remarkable revitalisation evolving it into the modern, profitable, influential and widely recognised organisation it is today,” Mr Brewer said.

Ms Mercorella’s community work includes serving as an Ambassador for The Forgotten Women and as a former Board Director of the Sycamore School.

Mr Brewer noted that the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards recognise local leaders who have made significant contributions to Brisbane through their business achievements.

“Antonia’s advocacy for a sustainable real estate market, her steady leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic, her support for the burgeoning proptech community, and her dedication to addressing homelessness and disadvantage have all greatly contributed to the well-being of Brisbane,” he said.

Ms Mercorella, who marks her 10th year as REIQ CEO in 2024, joined the organisation in 2010 as Legal Counsel before becoming CEO in 2014.

Originally from South Australia and a lawyer by profession, she has become a leading voice in Queensland’s real estate sector, influencing property-related legislation and promoting professionalism in the industry.

The full list of finalists for the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards is available on the official awards website.
