Dulux has named True Joy, a vibrant shade of yellow, as its Colour of the Year for 2025, according to interior designer Ryan McDonough from MyJobQuote.co.uk.
McDonough said the colour was chosen for its ability to brighten spaces and create a sense of positivity.
“True Joy is a versatile colour that can be used in various settings and paired with a wide range of other hues,” McDonough said.
The designer offered several suggestions for incorporating True Joy into home decor:
As an accent wall, particularly in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices.
“For a bold statement, paint an entire wall in True Joy. This is particularly effective in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices,” McDonough advised.
On trim and doors, for a subtle pop of colour.
For accessories such as throw pillows, curtains, rugs, or artwork.
On furniture pieces as a unique focal point.
In kitchens, either on cabinets or through accessories.
In bathrooms, as an accent colour for a spa-like feel.
McDonough recommended pairing True Joy with neutral colours like white, grey, and beige for a balanced look. He also suggested complementary colours like purple for a more vibrant atmosphere, or analogous colours like orange and green for a harmonious effect.
The designer emphasized the importance of considering lighting when using True Joy.
“True Joy appears brighter in natural light. If your space has limited natural light, opt for a slightly lighter or darker shade,” he said.
McDonough also advised balancing the colour with neutrals or other hues to prevent overwhelming a space.
“Avoid using too much True Joy in a single space. Balance it with neutrals or other colours to prevent the room from feeling overwhelming,” he said.
The expert encouraged homeowners to experiment with different shades and combinations to find the perfect fit for their space.
