The federal government has announced $50 million in funding to boost housing supply and community infrastructure in Far North Queensland.
Almost $25 million will support social housing projects across the region through the Housing Support Program.
“These projects mean more houses for more Cairns locals and better community facilities to bring them together,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
“We want to see more social housing and more quality community-led infrastructure where people need it most.”
The funding will support five housing developments, including $6.5 million for residential expansion in Pormpuraaw and $9.9 million to deliver 32 serviced lots in Seisia.
A $1.6 million allocation will transform 14 lots into 34 lots in Napranum, while $5.1 million will support a 20-lot social housing development in Bamaga.
Infrastructure Minister Catherine King highlighted the government’s focus on regional development.
“Whether cultural or community centres, sports facilities or town centres, we want to make our regions even better places to live, work and play โ and that’s what we’re investing in here in Far North Queensland,” King said.
The remaining $25 million will be distributed across seven community infrastructure projects through the Growing Regions Program, following a competitive assessment process.
Major projects include $4 million for the Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre, $5 million for the Redlynch Community Sporting Precinct, and $7.49 million for a new council administration hub in Wujal Wujal.
Queensland Senator Nita Green praised the investment package.
“I am so proud to be part of a government that cares about and invests in the communities of Far North Queensland,” Green said.
“The investment announced today shows that our government is listening to the needs of our region and is delivering them.”
The housing initiatives form part of the government’s broader plan to construct 1.2 million new homes over five years.
