A grand 13-bedroom estate in Torquay, once built by a Malaysian figure known locally as “the Sheik” and later converted into a luxury guesthouse, has been listed for sale.
Located at 1335 Horseshoe Bend Road, Whitesbeach sits on a 3,714sqm parcel just 200 metres from the shores of Whites Beach. The expansive three-storey residence features around 30 rooms and includes a range of lifestyle amenities such as a tennis court, playground, mini golf course, croquet lawn, and a covered swimming pool.
Agent Eliza Gold has launched an expressions of interest campaign closing on 29 April, with a price guide of $5.3 million to $5.83 million.
Owners Brian and Maria Handley are offering the property’s freehold along with the guesthouse business on a walk-in, walk-out basis as they wind down operations.
Mr Handley said the home was originally constructed as a private compound for a Malaysian family who hosted royal guests.
“Historically, it was never a guest house – it was built by a Malaysian family. He was affectionately called the Sheik and in fact Malaysian royalty did stay here on more than one occasion,” he said.
The property includes a billiards room featuring an original Thurston’s table, a dining room with a teppanyaki grill, and themed suites such as an Egyptian-inspired basement room. Upper-level suites offer ocean views, while all seven bedrooms have private ensuites.
“It’s got every conceivable amenity you would want,” Mr Handley said. “You can basically hide away, have your privacy, and then come down to the common area, which is very large, for your gathering.”
Past guests have included corporate groups and sports teams, with the Geelong Football Club once hosting its player induction program at the venue.
Ms Gold said the estate would appeal to a range of buyers.
“Whether envisioned as a magnificent private residence or a continuation of its legacy as a luxury retreat, this extraordinary estate holds immense appeal for discerning local, interstate, and international buyers,” she said.
