Former Barossa Valley cellar door transformed into trendy home hits the market

In the heart of South Australia’s renowned Barossa Valley, a unique property that once served as a bustling cellar door is now turning heads as a stylish, modern home. The former Kabminye Winery, located at 210 Krondorf Road, has been the residence of Marty Powell and his partner Bruce for the past 12 years. However, the couple is now preparing to bid farewell to their beloved home, listing it for sale as they plan their move closer to Adelaide for retirement.

The property, which originally operated as a cellar door complete with a restaurant, art gallery, and exhibition space, has undergone an extensive transformation. The renovation, which accelerated during the Covid pandemic, has turned the space into a four-bedroom house that seamlessly blends modern and industrial design elements while retaining its original character features.

Marty Powell shared his initial attraction to the property, saying, “The unique architecture and vineyard setting, along with the peace and quiet that comes with it, really drew us in.” When they first moved in, the property still very much resembled a cellar door, often leading to unexpected visits from hopeful wine enthusiasts. “People would stop in looking for a wine tasting,” Powell recalled, highlighting the property’s rich history.

The renovation journey was a significant undertaking for the couple, especially during the challenging pandemic period. “A lot of people renovated during Covid, and that certainly accelerated things for us,” Powell explained. “We went full swing during that time – brand new bathrooms, ensuites, a new kitchen, all while working with the old bones of the place. It’s quite industrial in character.”

The result is a stunning two-storey residence featuring expansive living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding wine country. A standout feature of the home is the central wine room, designed to take advantage of the naturally cool conditions. Additionally, a rustic wood-fired oven adds both functionality and charm, serving as a source of heating and cooking.

Powell expressed his fondness for the property’s setting, stating, “The setting is spectacular, and we’ve really enjoyed the sunsets here and many an impromptu cocktail hour.” As they prepare to move, the couple reflects on their time at the property with satisfaction. “We’re so happy with the work we have done here,” Powell said.

The decision to sell comes as the couple seeks a new chapter in their lives, with a focus on finding a property with less maintenance. “The search was hard. We’ve had this space for such a long time, but we’ve found a property with that same feeling and less maintenance,” Powell noted.

The property is versatile, appealing to a range of potential buyers, including those with entrepreneurial ambitions. “A lot of the hard work has been done. You can put in a swimming pool and a shed,” Powell suggested. “The infrastructure is there and someone can enjoy it as a home or even return it to a business.”

Ray White Grange agent James Aubert is handling the sale of this distinctive home, which is set to go under the hammer at 11 am on January 18. With its rich history, modern amenities, and picturesque setting, the former cellar door offers a unique opportunity for buyers looking to own a piece of the Barossa Valley’s vibrant heritage.
